The European Council for Animal Welfare & Excellence (ECWE) was founded with the purpose of promoting, developing, and advancing the highest standards of animal welfare, ethical responsibility, and professional excellence across the veterinary field and all sectors involved in the care, breeding, handling, protection, training, and well-being of animals.
Our organization was created in response to the growing need for a more advanced, ethical, and comprehensive vision of the relationship between professionals and the animals under their care. We believe that true excellence should not be measured solely through technical performance, clinical outcomes, productivity, or commercial success, but also through the ability to guarantee the highest standards of physical, emotional, and environmental well-being throughout every stage of an animal’s life.
For decades, much of the evolution within the veterinary and animal industries has focused primarily on improving medical, diagnostic, and technical procedures. While these advances have been essential, there is still significant room for progress regarding the animal’s experience during those processes, particularly in areas such as hospitalization, clinical examinations, diagnostic imaging, reproduction, breeding, neonatal care, transportation, behavioral training, recovery, and long-term welfare management.
At ECWE, we believe that animal welfare must never be considered a secondary or accessory element within professional practice. Instead, it should represent a core principle actively integrated into decision-making, protocol design, environmental management, and daily clinical and professional routines. This philosophy applies equally to veterinarians, hospitals, breeders, trainers, shelters, rescue organizations, boarding facilities, and all professionals working within the animal sector.
The mission of the European Council for Animal Welfare & Excellence is to encourage continuous improvement across the industry through the development of standards, protocols, recommendations, ethical frameworks, and objective evaluation criteria designed to promote increasingly respectful, compassionate, and welfare-oriented practices, while simultaneously recognizing professionals and institutions that demonstrate exceptional commitment to ethical responsibility, clinical excellence, and animal well-being.
As part of this mission, ECWE develops specialized protocols and welfare guidelines adapted to multiple professional sectors. Within veterinary medicine and hospital care, our organization works on recommendations aimed at minimizing stress, fear, anxiety, and unnecessary suffering during clinical procedures, hospitalization, diagnostics, surgery, and medical treatment. Likewise, within breeding and reproductive programs, ECWE promotes standards focused not only on hygiene, genetics, and health, but also on maternal welfare, neonatal well-being, early socialization, environmental enrichment, emotional development, and respectful reproductive management from the earliest stages of life.
Our vision is built upon the conviction that the future of the animal sector must be founded on a balance between science, ethics, innovation, compassion, and professional excellence, fostering a culture in which respect for animals, quality of life, emotional well-being, and advanced standards of care become the essential pillars of every activity connected to the animal world.

The European Council for Animal Welfare & Excellence operates through multiple areas of activity dedicated to the continuous improvement of animal welfare and professional excellence across all sectors involved in animal care, handling, housing, breeding, veterinary medicine, education, and protection.
One of our main areas of focus is the development of specialized protocols, recommendations, and welfare standards designed to improve animal well-being within daily professional practice. To achieve this, ECWE promotes the creation of ethical committees and multidisciplinary expert groups responsible for analyzing, reviewing, and developing individualized protocols adapted to the specific needs of each professional field.
These protocols are particularly intended for veterinary hospitals and clinics, breeding centers, shelters and rescue organizations, canine boarding facilities and pet hotels, training and behavioral centers, animal residences, exotic animal facilities, and any institution or professional whose activity involves direct interaction with animals.
The objective of these protocols is to establish practical and evidence-based measures capable of reducing stress, fear, anxiety, and unnecessary suffering during clinical, reproductive, educational, transport, boarding, and handling processes, while promoting safer, calmer, and more welfare-oriented environments adapted to the physical and emotional needs of each species.
In parallel, the European Council for Animal Welfare & Excellence develops systems of professional recognition and institutional accreditation designed to identify and distinguish professionals, centers, and organizations that demonstrate exceptional standards of both professional quality and genuine commitment to animal welfare. Through these accreditation programs, ECWE seeks to provide an objective benchmark capable of identifying institutions that actively implement advanced welfare protocols and integrate high-level ethical, environmental, and professional standards into their daily operations.
As part of this commitment to excellence and professional recognition, ECWE annually organizes the Animal Welfare & Excellence Awards, an international recognition program dedicated to honoring professionals and institutions that represent a model of excellence based not only on technical expertise and professional achievement, but also on a profound commitment to animal welfare as the central pillar of their philosophy and daily practice.
These awards encompass multiple sectors within the animal industry, including veterinary hospitals and clinics, breeding programs, trainers and behavioral professionals, shelters and rescue organizations, boarding facilities and pet hotels, specialized pet industry companies, laboratories, and other professionals whose work reflects advanced standards of animal welfare, ethical responsibility, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Through these awards, accreditation systems, and welfare initiatives, the European Council for Animal Welfare & Excellence aims to drive a progressive transformation of the animal sector, encouraging the development of a professional culture in which animal welfare becomes a fundamental, transversal, and inseparable element of every activity related to the care and well-being of animals.
